What is a step-up flute?
The first flute for the majority of flute players will be designed with ease of sound production as the focus. After a few years of practice and progression, flute players begin to desire more from an instrument. Not only are they required to play more complex and speedier technical passages, but their tonal requirements subtly change from ease of sound to quality of tone. This is where the student will look at the purchase of the 'step-up' instrument. This usually brings in to consideration models with headjoints of 925 silver or sometimes also with 925 silver body tube as well.
Do I need to oil my Trevor James wooden lip plate, wooden headjoint or wooden flute?
Any Grenadilla wood on your flute will be easy to care for. You will simply need to protect it from extremes of temperature and dryness. If you do not have a nut allergy then almond oil is by far the most frequently used. Take a small amount of almond oil on a cotton wool bud and wipe it over the wood. Never soak or over-oil any wood. Please note that it is vitally important to source an alternative oil should you have a nut allergy!

What happens if I get sticky pads?
Should the pads become sticky then it is important that you clean the inside of your flute to ensure that all moisture is eliminated. It is often said that using cigarette papers to soak up the moisture when sticky pads occur will solve the problem. The simple advice is DO NOT! The skin of the pad is very delicate when wet and can be torn very easily. If the problems persists then speak to your teacher or specialist flute shop.
What does 925 silver mean?
It means that the metal used has a 92.5% silver content.
What if I think my flute is playing out of tune?
Take the wooden cleaning which is included in you TJ flute outfit, gently insert the end which has the engraved line into the headjoint until it meets the cork plate. Look down into the embouchure hole and if the line is not located in the centre then you will need to ask your teacher or a specialist flute shop to realign the cork which is located unit inside

How does the new CITES ruling on wood that came in to effect on the 2nd January 2017 affect me?
This is currently a difficult ruling to follow; however the simplist answer is, yes you can travel overseas with your TJ flute if it has a wooden crown, lip plate or headjoint if it was manufactured (not when you purchased it from a music store) before January 2, 2017, as long as the wood of the Dalbergia genus that you are carrying weighs less than 10kg - which of course on Trevor James flutes it does. The Dalbergia genus includes the Grenadilla wood that our wooden crown, lip plate and headjoints are made from.
